Apple has a two-year tradition of updating its low-cost iPhone (iPhone SE) line. The most recent release was the iPhone SE 2022, and the next version is expected in 2024. However, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently stated that Apple has discontinued testing new iPhone SE.
The iPhone SE has died
According to Kuo, Apple has informed its supply chain partners that the iPhone SE 2024 production and delivery plans have been canceled, not just delayed.
This decision may have an impact on the release of the company’s first in-house chip, which is expected to be available on the first iPhone SE. Apple intends to use that device as a “lab mouse,” ensuring that any issues only affect the low-cost iPhone line. If everything goes as planned, the chip could be included in the iPhone 16 series by the end of 2024.
However, with the cancellation of the iPhone SE 2024, there are still doubts about Apple’s in-house chips’ ability to compete with Qualcomm’s products.
These concerns have significantly increased Qualcomm’s opportunity to supply chips for the iPhone 16 generation.
With this situation, Qualcomm is likely to continue supplying chips to Apple until the end of 2025. As a result, it is expected to continue dominating the global high-end mobile band chip market this year and next.
