According to a new report by display analyst Ross Young, the much-anticipated under-display Face ID feature will be delayed until the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, which is expected to be released in 2026.
In April, Young had claimed on Twitter that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max would replace the current Dynamic Island cutout with a “hole-punch” front camera, suggesting the implementation of under-display Face ID.
However, in a recent update, Young has backtracked on his prediction, stating that under-display Face ID on iPhones will now be delayed by one year, until 2026. This means that the technology is expected to debut on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, while the standard iPhone models will not have under-display Face ID until the iPhone 19, which is expected to launch in late 2027.
In addition, Young also predicts that all iPhone 17 models will adopt LTPO displays. Since the iPhone 14 Pro, LTPO displays have allowed Pro iPhone models to have an always-on display while maintaining battery life.
With this change, the always-on display feature is expected to become standard across all iPhone models. Currently, standard iPhones only use LTPS displays and do not have an always-on display function.
Of course, all rumors about future iPhone models should be taken with a grain of salt. The iPhone 16 is set to be released in September of this year and will retain the Dynamic Island cutout like its predecessors.
