The Information has shared the first alleged images of Apple’s upcoming mixed reality headset. The device is expected to launch next year. Recently, design artist Gian Zelbo created a render based on rumors for a device he calls the Apple View.
Apple View won’t need the iPhone by its side
Apple View headset will use both Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). In it, AR will layer a data layer on top of real-world images. For example, the Live View AR walking directions on Google Maps uses your phone’s front-facing camera to show where you are at the moment. And a layer of navigational directions along with the names of landmarks are placed on top.
Meanwhile, VR creates another world. When you wear an Apple device, you can interact with that world. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple’s mixed reality device will be equipped with modern motion detection so that users can control the device with gestures instead of having to carry around a controller bulky.
The smallest hand movements will be detected by the 3D sensors. Using powerful chips like the M1 Pro with 33.7 billion transistors, and the M1 Max with 57 billion transistors – the device will work without an iPhone connection.
In addition, switching between AR and VR is also seamless. Apple wants to provide the best user experience.
Apple also works with many developers to create the perfect apps for Apple View. Experts predict the device will cost around 3000 USD. So it’s not for everyone, at least in the early stages.
The cameras will be used to collect data and to track the user’s eye movements. There will be two 8K high-resolution screens.
However, Apple has lowered the resolution of the screen in areas considered to be in the peripheral vision of the user. Due to the huge cost, Apple is expected to ship only 250,000 units in the first year.
Many are waiting to see if Apple’s mixed reality wearable will be more successful than Google Glass.
