In addition to talks with Google, Apple is also close to a deal to bring the AI tool ChatGPT to iOS 18.
Apple and OpenAI are close to a deal on ChatGPT
According to sources familiar with the matter from Bloomberg, Apple has reached a deal with OpenAI to bring the ChatGPT solution to the iPhone. This is part of the Cupertino-based company’s efforts to add more AI tools to its devices.
An unnamed source said the two sides have finalized the terms of a deal to use ChatGPT features on iOS 18, the next version of the iPhone operating system. Apple has also held talks with Google about licensing its Gemini chatbot. However, discussions are ongoing and no deal has been finalized.
Apple has a strong hand in AI hardware, with the Neural Engine in its M4 chip capable of performing 38 trillion operations per second.
Currently, ChatGPT can be used directly on Android and iOS phones via the web or a downloadable app. Users can also give commands directly by voice.
The deal with OpenAI will allow Apple to offer the familiar chatbot as part of a suite of new AI features it plans to announce next month. The companies involved declined to comment on the rumors.
Apple’s plan is to create a buzz in the AI world at its WWDC event in June. In addition to partnering with outside companies, the Cupertino company will run some AI features through its data centers equipped with its own processors.
Last year, CEO Tim Cook revealed that he uses OpenAI‘s ChatGPT. However, the Apple executive also noted that it has some issues that need to be fixed. He promised that AI features on Apple products would be very well prepared.
In a recent earnings call, Tim Cook also said the company has many advantages in AI. “We believe in the transformative power and commitment of AI. Apple has the advantage to make a difference in the new era. It includes Apple’s unique combination of hardware, software and seamless services,” said the Apple CEO.
At the Let Loose event on May 7, Apple executives also mentioned AI on the new iPad several times. In it, Tim Millet, VP of Platform Architecture, asserted that the Cupertino company is the leader in AI, having equipped the A11 Bionic chip with the Neural Engine (Neural Engine) since the iPhone 8. Meanwhile, other companies have only recently pursued NPU solutions on SoCs.
Apple’s Neural Engine M4 can perform 38 trillion operations per second. The company claims that its AI hardware is more powerful than any existing personal computer.
