Twitter has stopped supporting iOS 13 and with it the iPhone 6. Many owners of this 8-year-old smartphone have taken to social media to lament the issue.
iPhone 6 was released in 2014. It was the first iPhone with a “phablet” screen size and a completely new candy bar design.
This device immediately broke Apple’s sales record. Apple provided new operating system updates for this device until iOS 13.6.1 was released in August 2020.
If a lot of people don’t update their operating systems right away, developers can still make apps for older versions.
The iPhone 6 is important because it’s the last iPhone that doesn’t get new operating system software. This makes it unique. iOS 15 can be installed on iPhones 6s and later, even if the owner doesn’t want to do it. Also, not supporting older operating systems helps developers find and fix bugs in older versions of apps.
Maybe for a lot of people, two years without upgrading is too much time. Some people, though, still love the iPhone 6. They may just want a phone that they can use to listen to music and make phone calls. Even though the battery on the iPhone 6 isn’t new anymore, it can still be used to some extent.
Apple thinks of itself as a company that makes high-quality devices that can last for years. The people who still have an iPhone 6 are proof of that. Each new operating system, however, will make some things obsolete and not be able to get the new one.
As far as I can tell, at least those who were complaining about the loss of the app seem to have found out that Twitter still works in Safari. With the iPhone SE, Apple has tried to get anyone who has an iPhone 8 or older to buy a new one. But for some people, that’s still not a good deal. Why should I spend money when my phone still works?
