Old AirPods have iCloud error even after factory reset

Many used AirPods are still linked to the old owner's iCloud account even after factory reset. This causes a lot of inconvenience to the new owner.

Old AirPods get error

iCloud issues, according to organizations who specialize in selling reconditioned AirPods, are causing them a lot of trouble. Some old AirPods with this issue may not work with the new device and will display the message “AirPods Mismatch.”

Even if the user hits the AirPod symbol in the Find my app, the device will alert other Apple ID-enabled devices and urge them to verify both sides of the headset.

GoTRG, a refurbishment company, was required to process product returns from Walmart and other shops as a result of the event. In just a few weeks, the number of faulty AirPods found has risen to almost 30,000 units.

According to goTRG’s director of sales, David Malka, the problem affects around eight out of ten of the company’s AirPods. Six goTRG facilities are currently experiencing issues.

“That’s a major issue.” Every day, we have to examine the facilities for bugs,” Malka explained.

Apple doesn’t normally provide a product lifespan, according to Kyle Wiens, CEO of iFixit. They also discourage customers from reusing equipment by encouraging them to buy and sell used items.

“This problem demonstrates Apple’s underlying goal of locking and controlling every part of the user experience.” It will synchronize the components inside the phone or headset with an account, according to the company “Mr. Wiens noted.

In December 2021 and March 2022, goTRG and iFixit both noticed AirPods-related difficulties. They are currently unable to pinpoint the source of the problem. The iOS operating system or the AirPods software could be at blame. All linked devices, including the new iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max versions, are affected.

According to Patrick Wardle, a security researcher and the founder of the non-profit organization Objective-See Foundation, this occurrence occurred because Apple wants to protect its customers’ interests.

Meanwhile, if the AirPods have not been factory reset, the prior owner can see the device’s location. In other words, they can use the previously associated Apple ID to determine the new owner’s location.

This circumstance will not occur, according to Malka, if the old user deletes all data associated with the device. When it comes to reselling AirPods, though, most people forget about this move.

“A burglar can restore a stolen AirPods to factory settings and use it regularly. Users who misplace their smartphones will be unable to locate them using the Find my app if this occurs “Wardle explains.
